Pre-Open Call Auction Discovery: How IPO Listing Price is Finalized at 9:45 AM
Grey Market & Listing Masterclass

1. The Pre-Open Window on Listing Day

On the morning of an IPO's stock exchange debut, trading does not start at 9:15 AM like normal secondary stocks. Instead, an extended 45-minute Call Auction session takes place to discover the fair equilibrium price.

2. Chronological Timeline of Pre-Open Session (9:00 AM – 10:00 AM)

Time Window Operational Phase Allowed Trader Actions
9:00 AM – 9:45 AM Order Collection Period Buyers and sellers enter limit orders. Orders can be modified or cancelled during this period.
9:45 AM – 9:55 AM Order Matching & Price Discovery System runs algorithm to discover the Equilibrium Price. No order entry or cancellations allowed.
9:55 AM – 10:00 AM Buffer & System Transition Transition window to setup order book for continuous market trading.
10:00 AM Sharp Continuous Trading Begins Regular secondary market trading opens with discovered price as baseline.

3. How the Equilibrium Price Algorithm Works

The exchange matching engine aggregates all cumulative buy bids and sell asks across every price point. The price that satisfies the following criteria becomes the Official Opening Listing Price:
  • Maximum Tradable Volume: The price where the largest volume of shares can be matched between buyers and sellers.
  • Minimum Asymmetry: If multiple price points match the same volume, the price with lowest unmatched order imbalance is chosen.
  • Proximity to Issue Price: In case of ties, the price closest to the issue price band is selected.

  • 4. Day 1 Circuit Filters for Mainboard IPOs

  • Issues < ₹250 Crore: Circuit band is typically 5% above or below the discovered opening price.
  • Issues ≥ ₹250 Crore: Circuit band is typically 20% above or below the discovered opening price.
